Choose To Live Life Your Way

The following article I wrote right before I began my incredible journey of living on the road in a van. Since then, my hubby and I have traveled from East to West, North, and South in 3 years. We have worked in Yellowstone National Park, Death Valley National Park, and The Grand Tetons. We experienced the incredible feeling of standing at the Grand Canyon while camping there. We have lived in the Arizona desert before finally landing in the state of Maine where our van met its demise. Life has been good and there is nothing I would have changed…. except maybe having a better campervan. Hope you enjoy the article and take from it that there is nothing wrong with living your life in the way that brings you the greatest joy.

Sometimes, the choices that we make for our life, does not coincide with what society feels is normal or right. But who is society anyway and why do they have the right to determine what is normal and what is not?

For those of us who choose to live a life free from traditional society and head out to live life in our own way, we are often met with family who don’t understand and people who cruelly judge our lifestyles. Yet, the most beautiful part of being judged in this way is that we truly do not care what they think. We are happy with the lifestyle we have chosen to live. There is nothing more invigorating than living life with a freedom that so many fear to take. Yes, it hurts and it is disappointing when our families don’t understand. Yes… we get tired of people saying all the time “why don’t you just settle down and get a life!” But don’t allow any one’s judgment or their lack of understanding, bring you down. Just smile and in the nicest way possible let them know…. “I do have a life… it is called Freedom and this life makes me very happy.”

Sometimes, we have to remember that most people have been raised to believe that there is a certain way to live. Many just fear the things they do not understand and instead of educating themselves to better understand…. they use belittling judgments to make themselves feel better. In my opinion… those who live in fear of changes because they fear the unknown are only locking themselves away in Society’s prison. I feel sorry for them because they will never know or understand the true meaning of freedom.

For most of my adult life, I have done everything that was expected of me. I was married and divorced, raised three great sons as a single mom and always made sure that everyone and everything was taken care of. But the only thing that ever brought me true joy in my life has always been my boys. They made every sacrifice in my life so worthwhile and if I had to do it all again I would not change a thing. They are now young men living their own lives and I no longer can find any joy in society’s traditional living. I have a gypsy heart. The freedom of the road beckons my heart and overflows my spirit with a force that cannot be denied.

As I begin this wonderful journey in my life, I am not going into it blindly or with rose-colored glasses. There are going to be challenges and there will be some rough roads ahead. No matter what lifestyle you choose to live…. Life will never be easy and struggles will always show its ugly head. But if you are living the lifestyle that brings you the most joy to your life… then those struggles and challenges are nothing more than a bump in the road we just have to drive over. Every bump leads you to a more peaceful, stronger, more fulfilled person, with an understanding of the world around you that so many fail to see because they are still being held captive in society’s prison.

When you step away from what everyone thinks you should be doing and you begin to live life in your own way and on your own terms….. That is just a feeling of freedom that no amount of money can ever buy. As I begin this journey of living life on the road and facing of so many unknowns…. I do so with a hint fear but and a universe of excitement and passion. There are many who may not understand my lack of worry, my lack of having a set plan, my lack of being able to conform to society’s way of thinking…. but that’s ok because it really isn’t for them to understand. For the first time in my life… this is all about ME and what I want for MY life. Should I be worried about the many unknowns and the “what ifs” out there? Perhaps… but think about this- each day that we are given there are no guarantees. You can live your life on daily set routines that makes you feel secure and safe…. but life is always going to throw you an unexpected monkey wrench that will bring that false sense of security and safety to an end. Then what? How will you handle what life throws your way when the security you once felt is shattered?

Worry and anxiety only drains your life of true joy and happiness. You spend all your time worrying about things that you can’t change or have no control over. So what good does it do you to worry? I know I have people in my life who feel I don’t worry enough about my future. But why should I? Tomorrow is not guaranteed to anyone so why spend all your time living in a way that brings you no happiness or peace in your life? I would much rather live life with the freedom of spontaneity and of the unknown because no matter what we choose to do… in the long run our fates have been chosen. I choose to live my life doing what makes me happy. And if the road I choose leads me to a place I don’t like…. then I will pack up and move on and not worry about what comes next.

So remember, don’t worry about what other’s think about your life. Only you have the power to choose to live your life in the best way possible that will fill you with the joy of peace and a lifetime of happiness and no regrets. We do have a life…. We are living our life in a way that is best for us. Life is too short. Live Happy!
